In the past year I have been treated by 2 different departments for cancer, Head and neck and Urology and all the staff I have met have been amazing. The specialist teams both departments have for cancer patients are very knowledgeable, explain different treatments so you can understand fully what to expect and tell you bluntly how it is and what needs to be done, no beating around the bush, and I liked that because at least you can really know what you are up against, some people won't like it but with cancer you need straight talkers. The nurses are the best ever, so caring and thoughtful, and I have made some very special friends with some of the nurses, friends for life. One of the best hospitals for cancer treatments. I don't live in Sunderland so I have to travel, but it's easy to find, the only problem I can say is the parking, it's a nightmare, if you don't get there at least 20 minutes before you're appointment you can miss it, honestly some days or times off appointments are worse than others, but I would urge people get there early so you have enough time to park. 10 out of 10 for the staff.

Came in with my son for an emergency after calling 111, who advised he needed immediate attention from a doctor. But it felt like nobody cared or understood the urgency. There were no queues, and I was the only one waiting with my son, yet we still waited over three hours after the initial assessment to see a doctor. It’s called an emergency unit, but it didn’t feel like one at all. I honestly don’t know what to say. All I could hear was doctors laughing and chatting while we waited. Time mid night - 3am

Sunderland Royal hospital has been offering great medical services. It has its 24/7 emergency services. The hospital is clean and neat and the nurses are doing exceptionally good. Offering g great services to humanity. There is a little renovation going on on the outside and this is well managed to avoid any form of crisis. Great service

17/12/25 I spent this morning at the Sunderland Royal outpatients in the Trauma & Orthopaedics Outpatient Clinic and Medical Physics for appointments, and also visited the X-ray. As I went through the hospital, it looked newly refurbished and was spotless. It was so lovely to see how much effort had been put into making it festive. Every tree, and there were many, looked wonderful. Some staff members wore little headbands with antlers and ears or bells. It was lovely to see. Every single member of staff I passed had a smile on their face and even stopped me to ask if I needed help. We might have looked a bit lost trying to find the right department! It’s the first day of the doctors’ strike today, so the staff must have been working extra hard and I was mindful and grateful. The three waiting rooms I attended were equally spotless with modern, comfortable chairs and bright, airy decor. I thought, given they were waiting rooms, they had been thoughtfully decorated and didn’t look clinical and ‘cold’ as some that I have attended. While I was waiting in the T&OOC, a lovely man was walking around the waiting room with his trolley offering complimentary hot drinks and water. He was followed by an equally smiley lady selling newspapers, sweets, and snacks. Wonderful. I was so very upset to see on a whiteboard in the waiting room that there had been three incidents reported of violence towards members of staff. This was before 11 o’clock in the morning. All of the staff in the hospital, no matter their role, are there to help patients. This was abundantly clear this morning. So, I want to offer a great big thank you and pass on to your staff how very much appreciated they are by the masses, not just a few. Very well done. I don’t think you all could have done anything else to make my visit this morning more comfortable. On your darkest days when things aren’t going to plan, remember there are many patients who are extremely grateful and thankful for what you do every single day. Thank you, best wishes for Christmas and a healthy and happy 2026.

Sunderland Hospital Orthopaedic Dept is world class No1, giving best treatment and care of highest order. Special thanks to Dr Y Michla FRCS( Trauma, Orthopaedic Consultant Surgeon) - for doing superb operation on my shoulder. Dr is most courteous gentleman and professional. Also am very grateful to Dr Nathan and Ed ( Anaesthesiologist Dept ), OT Nurses ( Cindi Chu , Jacqueline, few more ) and all day staff at DOSA unit and the Reception.
